At PlaneWorks we consider the function of a piece of furniture very important and its form should allow it to perform brilliantly as well as make a statement in style.
This sideboard was designed to complement a dining table and as a showcase for Australian timber, five species of which were used in its creation.
At Australian interpretation on a classical European theme, this refectory features River Red Gum, a spectacular looking timber only recently available in commercial quantities.
Our commitment to quality is such that when we cannot obtain a tool good enough to accomplish a task, we will make one. The photo at top is of a 630 mm jointing plane made of bronze and Tasmanian blackwood with a blade and an adjusting mechanism of our design. It is such uncompromising commitment to quality that enables us to produce joins of such precision and beauty exemplified in the photo below.
These principles guided us to choose these timbers from three Continents to complement one another. The Shoji-Style lattice functions as drawer pulls. The drawers glide smoothly using no plastic or metal runners, just wood on wood.
Sideboard

It now takes pride of place in a San Franciscan home.
Refectory

We carefully select each board to fit in each position in every piece of furniture we make. This is an important quality which makes each of our products the special furniture it is.
